Yachting 2014 Part 2
| Cameron is in control! |
Me and Julius went together for the first round we were going good until…. He started screaming and I got a massive fright which caused us to capsize. Mary
Something I was pleased with was that last year I didn't like going yachting that much and this year I went yachting more. Crystal
Something that made me think was which way I should go, in optimist yachting, to catch the wind. Elijah
On Tuesday we went kayaking and we had a race and Traylan and I won the race. George
Today there was a little bit of wind, I went with 3 people and then I went by myself and when you go by yourself you go faster than going with 3 people. Jack
Dear diary. I got hit by the boom really bad because I was bringing a yacht in and the boom swung and hit my head! Jacob
It was so fun - 100% James
The best yachting buddy that I had in yachting was Jack. Traylan
Something I was pleased with was being able to go on a yacht for the first time because I thought I didn't have the courage to. Maia
Me and Jack just about capsized today and it was not funny. Liam
Ok let me get right to the point, the best one was yachting because it was my first time on one and I had been kayaking before. Rosemary
It was so sad because today was our last day of optimist yachting. But the best bit is that I get to do it next year. Kyra
I really enjoyed learning how to yacht because it is very fun & hard. Zach

Taranga had four children that she had raised on her own and was about to have a 5th. When it was born it will be half man and half god. Taranga taught her four children how talk and sing to Maui well he was still in her tummy. They were all very excited. They would talk to their pepe everyday. They sang to him, "taku kurapounamu taku motoi kahurangi o taha, o roto, o pae, o waho e…” One day Maui Taha asked Taranga, “When we are singing to our pepe, can he hear us?”
“Yes my son, he can,” replied Taranga. From that day on, they would waiata, haka, and korero to their growing pepe.
One day when Taranga went for a walk on the beach she felt a niggly pain in her tummy. She could tell that Maui was coming. She couldn't walk any further and she felt really weak. She cried out “Help!” But no one could hear her. Then she started to give birth.
Maui was born but he did not move. Taranga accidently thought he was dead. She grabbed a shell and cut the pito, but he still didn't move. She cut her hair and wrapped him in it. Then she put him in the water and he floated out to sea. What she did not realise was that Maui was still alive.
Tangaroa had noticed Maui bobbing up and down in the sea and sent seaweed to wrap Maui in. The seaweed would protect Maui. The seaweed carried maui to his grandfather Tama-nui-ki-te-rangi. During the trip he sent a few of his other children to help Maui along the way. Maui then reached his grandfather.”What have you brought me? “ asked Tama-nui-ki-te-rangi. He saw Maui through the thick hair and then Maui sang the song “ taku kurapounamu taku motoi kahurangi o taha, o roto, o pae, o waho e…” He knew then that it was Taranga’s son and his grandson.
He grew older and got taught waiata, haka, taiaha and whakapapa. He also learnt how to control his powers. Every night as he went to sleep his grandfather would sing the song to him. “Taku kurapounamu taku motoi kahurangi o taha, o roto, o pae, o waho e…” One day he wanted to go and see his family. He asked his grandfather where he would find them. He got told all about his birth and were he would find them. Then he went off to the place he would find them. He traveled far and long until he came to the place where he would find his whanau. He saw a flicker of fire and heard some voices. When he got closer he recognised the song they were singing. Then he knew, it was his four brothers. He joined them and also tried to explain he was their brothers. They did not believe it was him until he showed he could do the haka, and showed his powers to turn into a bird. That's when they noticed it was Maui. They were all shocked.
They all asked him questions but Maui just kept on saying that he was their brother. During all of that, Taranga was watching. She had no idea who this man was, but she had a weird feeling in her puku. Maui walked up to her and Taranga asked “ Who are you?”
Maui song the song again, “taku kurapounamu taku motoi kahurangi o taha, o roto, o pae, o waho e…” That's when Taranga realised it was Maui. She give him a big hug. Taranga told Maui how she had always thought he was dead. All of Maui’s brothers welcomed him. Now Maui is known as Maui-tikitiki-a-Taranga.

That Old Washing Machine
Text type: Recount. Purpose: Entertain
WALT use different sentence starters
I know I can do this when:
- My sentences start with different words
- Capital letters to start sentences and for proper nouns
- Some short, sharp sentences
- Some complex sentences
- Speech marks for talking / new line for each talker (Taylor)
- Group sentences into paragraphs (Maia)
My key words: skip, garage, washing machine
At last it looked like my skip was arriving. A big truck started to reverse down the driveway towards our garage. On the back of the truck was a mechanical crane device and an enormous shiny orange skip. In order to get the skip off the truck, the driver had to hop out and operate the crane. “Where do you want it?” asked the driver.
“Just in front of the basketball hoop will be great,” I replied. “Do you think I will have room to get my car out?”
“Yeah, sweet as,” the driver reassured me, as he walked towards the controls on the back of his truck. To me, it was like he was operating a spaceship, the way he was using multiple buttons, pulleys and shafts to control the crane. To him, it was as easy as pie. Yet there was no doubt of the skill involved in getting the three cubic metre bin to sail through the air and land on the perfect spot. Did I mention how narrow my driveway is?
I thanked him for such a great job and just like that, the truck was gone. Left on the driveway was this huge orange skip. It was just waiting to be filled. Timidly, I opened the garage. It was a rubbish dump sprinkled with precious items such as my bike. Staring back at me was the stubborn broken washing machine. There was a battle looming. I strode up to it. Then, very slowly, I moved it side to side, closer to the skip. Eventually, it was time to lift the beast. With all my might I heaved it into the air. I had lifted it close to the ledge of the skip, but it still wasn't high enough. For a split second, I thought the weight might be too much and I would collapse in a heap. As though I had transformed into a weightlifter, I gave one last determined effort and lifted the washing machine up above the skip. Bang! It crashed down into the skip with a satisfying metallic clunk.
There would be smaller battles to come, as I filled the skip. I shouldn't really mention the panic that seized me into action, as the driver reversed down the driveway to pick up the skip and I hadn't quite cleared the garage yet. Nevermind the stuck TV, when I just had to pull it so hard that the power cord ripped out of the set. The driver had it right when he said “that’ll do it”. Forget about the extra rubbish that might have found a temporary home in the skip - I managed to clear it up anyway. Yes, the real story was that I fought that old washing machine and I won.

Enjoyment of the Race
| The 5 senses |
Quickly, I carried the bike forward and rammed my left leg up against the gates. I called Nicky's name and she ran towards me. In a brief panic, she transferred the electronic bracelet to my ankle. I would find out later that Nicky attached my leg to the metal post at first and that my hairy ankle had almost made her vomit!
With urgency, I ran my bike towards the marshals and got on my seat as soon as I could. My legs eased into the rotations as I breathed in the sea air. Faint smells of barbecue dissipated into the distance. My bike cut through the bumpy road, propelled by those racing wheels Stephen had added and my newly discovered enjoyment of the race. I was free. Completely alive in the moment.
