Outside Our Window

Outside our window we have a lovely view. Lately, our literacy groups have been writing hard or interesting words on the windows. I wonder if it will wash off.

Good readers notice words. They especially notice words they don't know the meaning of. They know it is important to find out the meaning of these words. The words in the window are from the Jedi Knights. What might they have been reading about?

We have enjoyed our holiday and it is great to be back in Room 16! Here are some holiday highlights that the students will be sharing on their blogs soon. Our highlights were pasted into Star Wars Crawl Creator and Tagul to produce the word displays. If you scroll over the Tagul word cloud, the text is highlighted and then zooms out so you are able to read the smaller words.

Action Verbs Part 3: Angry Verbs!

We worked with our Room 5 buddies to complete our Angry Verbs. Mrs H and I were so impressed with how all the students worked together. Our Angry Verbs look great! Check out the student blogs on the side (Branches) to see more. 

Visit Room 5's post to see theirs. "We are going to use the verbs on our birds in our writing. Using verbs in our writing helps to make a movie in the readers head."

Action Verbs Part 2

Here is a video I created about our work towards creating angry verbs with our buddy class, Room 5. The music in the video is by Jurassic 5. Notice that each verb has four versions. Which version you use depends on the tense (present, past and future) as well as how you have formed your sentence.

On Monday, we will be working with our buddy class to finish presenting our angry verbs. They're looking pretty funky so far! Here are some photos from Mrs Hill showing us working together.

Today we started to work with our year two buddy class, Room 5 Kidd-Li-Winks on creating our own angry verbs (idea from our pen pal class Room 121 in the USA). This blog post has the first stage in the process.

Firstly, we read a quick book about verbs. Then using a variety of P.E. gear, we acted out sporting actions with our buddies. As it was happening, we discussed present, past and future tenses for our verbs. We also came up with many more verbs bacause of all the unplanned actions which were involved.

WALT use our senses effectively to create a story

Success Criteria:

• Really use the senses so the reader can visualise
• Correct sentences 
• Short, sharp sentences to build tension (in parts) 
• Paragraphing groups of sentences
• Beginning, middle and end
• Problem and resolution

Here is our writing prompt, including words that we visualised from the prompt using our senses. I wonder how well we will achieve the criteria of the story.

Emotive Language

WALT: Persuade

Part of persuading is appealing to the reader's / listener's / viewer's feelings. Here are some of the emotive words Room 20 are using to persuade the reader in our topic writing. We are trying to initiate a change in the ways we deal with rubbish.

We are learning to form correct sentences

This poster helps us to form correct sentences. We developed it yesterday to improve our sentence formation and it seems be working!

Word Of The Day

We had fun exploring words on the Snappy Thesaurus at Brain Food today. Kharn suggested "big" and the other words for big exploded out across the webpage. Then Tyler suggested "little". It is a great site for having fun with words and choosing the exact right words for your writing.
