Cyber Safety

Today Constable Wong spoke to Room 16 and Room 17 about cyber safety. We are learning to be digital citizens and his messages were very helpful.

If something goes wrong it is so important you tell a parent or teacher. We will help you and we can learn from what happened.

Cyber Safety with Mr Wong

• Try to be safe and sensible
• Rules are to keep us safe
• You are meant to be at least 13 to be on Facebook
• Lots of things on the internet can be inappropriate
• Supervision of parents at home
• iPods, cellphones, netbooks... (we have a lot of digital tools to communicate in different ways)
• Hurt feelings (instead of being a laugh it becomes bullying)
• If you don’t know who they are, you can’t trust them
• Anything you put online, look at or send is always going to be there (even if you delete it, it can be found)
• People don’t give you free stuff, if you click on it you could get a virus or get ripped off
• If you get the wrong emails, you need to show your teacher
• If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is...

We Love Comments!

Earlier in the year, Room 20 created a post on quality comments. We sure have progressed to be experts at making quality comments since then. These are comments from Natasha's The Bracelet, Chapter One (which she published in the weekend). Quality comments really encourage us to learn more and create more!

Fabo Story 3

This email appeared in my inbox today, from Kathy White, the author of Buddy. I think we should give it a go! What do you think?

"FABO STORY 3 begins with a letter posted on the blog on Monday 16 July - a letter that threatens to disrupt the biggest sporting event in world history - the TITANIC GAMES.

Who wrote the letter and to whom? Why would they make threats? It's your job to write a follow-on chapter. YOU decide what the story is about, who the characters are, and what happens to them next. Write the next chapter in the story (up to 1000 words) and send it to fabostory@gmail.com in the body of your email (not as an attachment) by 5pm on Friday 27 July. The winning chapter will appear on Monday 30 July at the same time as a chapter by one of the children's authors. From then on, every week is another episode in a big, dark writing adventure.

WALT: create a timeline

I came across this idea by checking out the blog of Katrina, a university student who commented on Teva's blog.

Timetoast, it's a great website to create and share all sorts of timelines. We are going to have a go this week. All you need is an email address to set up an account. Here is the video tutorial which Katrina shared with me.

Quality Comments

I am very impressed by the number of positive comments coming into our blogs. Thank you!

This week we are going to build a success criteria for quality commenting. Then we will expand our commenting so that we comment each week on at least one Room 20 blog, one other Parkvale blog and another blog from Aotearoa or the rest of the world! As we do this, we will copy and paste each comment we make on to a Google doc to build a record of our comments and blog visits over the year.

Reflections from our first three weeks in a Digi Class!
Something I was pleased with was being in a digital classroom because you get to learn new things everyday - Sushila
Something I was pleased with was being able to go on a computer and do things that I couldn’t do before like using google docs and being able to blog - Courtney
I really enjoyed learning how to use Google docs because I get to write stories that I think of and it makes me happy because I like writing. Tyler
Something I was pleased with was being in a computer class because not many people get to be in it and we get to use computers all the time. Bianca
Something I found hard  at first was keeping up with instructions for publishing posts on the blogs - trying to keep up with the steps. I feel like I have improved and now can keep up with the instructions. Hannah
Something that made me think was how to solve the area problem because it was hard and I thought about it and I solved it using my known facts, my times tables. Parris
Something I want to get better at is typing faster on the computer.

Language Of Success

Blogging is part of our daily routine. We will look at each other's blog posts to leave comments.

When we post comments they need to be positive, thoughtful and helpful. They also need to be proof read, just like our blog posts. 


In our blog posts and in our comments we will learn to use the language of success. This means using correct spelling and punctuation. Simple things like capital letters and full stops are important, because we are sharing with the world on the internet. We are representing ourselves, our class and our community. We need to show Parkvale PRIDE. It also means it is easy for people to understand what we are saying. Our learning has an audience.


Update: Our blogging criteria to get a Blogging Licence:

• use the language of success (correct language, spelling and punctuation)
• decide on relevant and interesting content
• proof reading skills
• save as a draft first
• multimedia skills (image, sound, video, embedding)
• linking (including citizenship)
• labelling
• view and comment (positive, relevant, constructive, language of success)
