He went to find his mum and brothers but his brothers did not know who he was, Maui showed his brothers his powers and then they believed him. Taranga had four children that she had raised on her own and was about to have a 5th. When it was born it will be half man and half god. Taranga taught her four children how talk and sing to Maui well he was still in her tummy. They were all very excited. They would talk to their pepe everyday. They sang to him, "taku kurapounamu taku motoi kahurangi o taha, o roto, o pae, o waho e…” One day Maui Taha asked Taranga, “When we are singing to our pepe, can he hear us?” 

“Yes my son, he can,” replied Taranga. From that day on, they would waiata, haka, and korero to their growing pepe.

One day when Taranga went for a walk on the beach she felt a niggly pain in her tummy. She could tell that Maui was coming. She couldn't walk any further and she felt really weak. She cried out “Help!” But no one could hear her. Then she started to give birth.

Maui was born but he did not move. Taranga accidently thought he was dead. She grabbed a shell and cut the pito, but he still didn't move. She cut her hair and wrapped him in it. Then she put him in the water and he floated out to sea. What she did not realise was that Maui was still alive.

Tangaroa had noticed Maui bobbing up and down in the sea and sent seaweed to wrap Maui in. The seaweed would protect Maui. The seaweed carried maui to his grandfather Tama-nui-ki-te-rangi. During the trip he sent a few of his other children to help Maui along the way. Maui then reached his grandfather.”What have you brought me? “ asked Tama-nui-ki-te-rangi. He saw Maui through the thick hair and then Maui sang the song “ taku kurapounamu taku motoi kahurangi o taha, o roto, o pae, o waho e…” He knew then that it was Taranga’s son and his grandson.

He grew older and got taught waiata, haka, taiaha and whakapapa. He also learnt how to control his powers. Every night as he went to sleep his grandfather would sing the song to him. “Taku kurapounamu taku motoi kahurangi o taha, o roto, o pae, o waho e…” One day he wanted to go and see his family. He asked his grandfather where he would find them. He got told all about his birth and were he would find them. Then he went off to the place he would find them. He traveled far and long until he came to the place where he would find his whanau. He saw a flicker of fire and heard some voices. When he got closer he recognised the song they were singing. Then he knew, it was his four brothers. He joined them and also tried to explain he was their brothers. They did not believe it was him until he showed he could do the haka, and showed his powers to turn into a bird. That's when they noticed it was Maui. They were all shocked.

They all asked him questions but Maui just kept on saying that he was their brother. During all of that, Taranga was watching. She had no idea who this man was, but she had a weird feeling in her puku. Maui walked up to her and Taranga asked “ Who are you?” 

Maui song the song again, “taku kurapounamu taku motoi kahurangi o taha, o roto, o pae, o waho e…” That's when Taranga realised it was Maui. She give him a big hug. Taranga told Maui how she had always thought he was dead. All of Maui’s brothers welcomed him. Now Maui is known as Maui-tikitiki-a-Taranga.

Today Room 5 and Room 6 went to the Holt Planetarium in Napier. We got to view the night sky in extreme detail, guided by the amazing Mr Sparks. My favourite things under the dome were learning more about the significance of the Southern Cross and seeing exactly where all the planets and constellations are in the sky at the moment. The night sky is like a calendar.

I also loved the chance just to lean back and gaze at the night sky and get pointed out super cool stuff! Earlier, we watched an amazing video of NASA astronauts in space. It showed us some very amusing effects of being zero gravity.

I would strongly recommend a visit to the Hawke's Bay Holt Planetarium. Sunday evening is family night.

Just like the Room Seven Superstars, we are using this whakatauki to inspire us to learn and work together so that we can reach our goals. Kia ora Room 7 and Mr Cottrell!

All of us in Room 6 have created a part of the waka that represents us. I am at the head of the waka, along with Mr Severinsen, who we are lucky to have when I am not teaching Room 6. Together, our pieces create our waka. Without any one of the pieces, our waka is not complete.

Please watch our Gandhi movie. It tells the story of two great men and the birth of a nation. The movie was directed by Hannah and Tracey and stars Teva, Sam, Hannah, Ben, Lily, Jessica, Crighton, Dylan and Room 16 as the crowd. It is also screening at the Parkvale Arts exhibition which features our henna hands and Taj Mahal art.

Speaking of the arts exhibition, today I felt privileged to see our hall filled with the sparkling art of our 21 classes, based on many cultures around the globe. It looks amazing.

Here is a great quote from Mr Gifkins which sums it up: "I am blown away by my visit to the school hall. The exhibition is BRILLIANT! AMAZING! FANTASTIC! AWESOME! and UNBELIEVABLE. I am very proud to walk into the hall and look around at the exceptional quality of work achieved by our pupils under the amazing teaching and guidance of you all. You are simply superb!! The hall is exploding with PRIDE."

Room 16's India

Our India topic has been wonderful. We have been cooking Indian food with Inderpreet's and Hemani's mums. Imaan's mum has created real henna with most of the girls and also shared food. We have learnt about henna, the wonderful architecture and love story of the Taj Mahal, and really enjoyed the music and dance of Bollywood.

In the last week of term, we are sharing our art in the Parkvale Arts Festival. If you scan our poster for the exhibition using the Aurasma augmented reality app, you will be able to watch our Bollywood trailer (which is also embedded below). Each class will have a poster featuring their own Aurasma for their arts display. All Room 16 students' Indian artworks also have a unique Aurasma video, which you will be able to scan at the art festival.

What is Culture?

We have a new topic this term. We are learning to explore and communicate through the arts. To do this we are learning about different cultural practises. We will be appreciating the arts of other cultures as well as our own. Yesterday, we asked "what is culture?". After lots of discussion and a little research, our learning buddies came up with these suggestions.

Room 16, A Ship of Friends

Earlier in the term, Room 16 created topic art based on friendship. Some students found excellent friendship quotes through  research, some created their own quote or used a quote from their reading. The art lesson was inspired by this site and is based on the artwork Over and Above, by Clarence Carter. 

I finally got around to finishing this video about the artwork. I am proud of it because I have learnt and practised some new techniques using the iMovie app on our iPad, including creating my own music on GarageBand. I was lucky to be in a lesson by the fantastic music teacher, Ieremia at Richmond School. Afterwards, I tried the techniques he taught us, until it sounded okay.

The students' artworks look fantastic on the wall together. I love the idea of us all learning to be friends together as a class, celebrating our differences and helping each other grow as individuals. When things go wrong, the artwork on the wall reminds us how we can fix it and get it right.

Hemani's Venn Diagram with Nick

Our third Student Work of the Week for 2013 was judged by Mrs Hill from Room 5 Kidd-li-winks this week. We got together with our buddy class, then paired up and compared important things about ourselves. We used Google drawing to create venn diagrams to show things which are the same and different.

Mrs H chose Hemani for how well she worked with her Room 5 buddy, Nick. As you can see, their venn diagram is clear and laid out very effectively. It compares and contrasts important things about them.

The whole of Room 16 worked very well with Room 5 and I am very proud of their efforts!

The Challenge Tree for Term One

Room 16 have begun their Challenge Tree for the term. These are challenges you can complete at home. Then you share them with the class and me. The completed challenge is to go on your blog with a Challenge Tree label (plus other labels that fit).

Remember you have the rest of the term to complete some of these challenges. It is about quality not quantity. We would rather you did one or two of the challenges to your personal best standard and presented them effectively, than rush through all eight. The challenges match the learning and topics that we are covering in the class. At the moment we are learning about our own cultures and sharing things about us with others.

Olympic Opening Ceremony

We are really getting into our Olympics topic. It is just a pity that it is too wet to continue the Room 20 Olympics at the moment!

Our Worm Farm

Finally, a new post! This time it took a guest blogger Eden to update The Tree of PRIDE. She is sharing class topic news of the worm farm in Room 20 (provided by Natasha).









Room 20’s topic is recycling and there is about 5 groups. I’m in the food scraps group. Our team leader Felicity had an idea of a worm farm and to get separate bins so Natasha brought a worm farm. It's really stinky but it’s easy to get used to. I had this strange idea of two people from each class to care for the worms and get compost bins in every class. Well I think that's a good idea. I mean it would cost a lot of money but it would make a massive difference. If you're reading this I hope you can make a difference as well and if we do help out we could have a better future.
