The Year So Far...

Room 6 Reflection for 2014 so far:

Something I was pleased with was how I shared my dyslexia because I had to make sure it was good. Jaidyn

I enjoyed Masterchef because me, Ben, Liam, Kelly and Rosemary made brunch. JACOB

Reading is my favourite because we read Wonder and it is very interesting. Also we have reading groups and reading is one of my favourite things. Taylor

I learnt lots about stars, it is a fun topic to learn on. Zach

Something I enjoyed doing is sport because they are all fun and challenging. This year I have learnt how to play rugby and canoe polo, I also made it to inter school swimming but it was cancelled because of bad weather. Matilda

The most thing I have enjoyed was going to Flax Rock. I learnt how to rock climb and to be safe while doing it. Kellyanne

Something I enjoy is writing Miami Heat stories because you can do lot of writing in it. Traylan

Matariki is very fun also because we got to go to the planetarium at Napier Boys High.   Julius

Something I enjoy is going around teachers that need help for them or their class. Because it is fun to help and show them how to do it. Cameron

I am proud that I am in room 6 because I have had lots of fun. KAYLA

I enjoy being a sports pal at lunchtimes because I can see people playing games at lunch and being happy. Mary

I was proud of myself when I touched the top of the rock climbing wall. Brooklyn

I enjoyed writing about my soccer games. “GO WESTERN RANGERS!” we yelled and ran onto the field” is my favourite scene from my first soccer game.  James

I have liked learning about area and perimeter in maths because I like to build things and when you build things you have to know the area and perimeter. Area and perimeter have done me good because on the weekend I built a hut out of wood and nails and corrugated iron. I had to be careful with the area and perimeter and measurements.
Ezra

I really enjoyed rippa rugby and working as a team. Ben

I enjoyed the Young Leader mud run at the army assault course because it was lots of fun. I found it sort of challenging crawling under the cargo net. Elijah

Having blogger is really fun because we can share what we have done in class in our own way. Kyra

The thing I most enjoyed was going to the planetarium
and learning about black holes and about space. Maddison

In assembly Miss Hill was announcing the Young Leaders and I got one! YAY! Tracey

Flax Rock was the bomb! Maia

I enjoyed doing blog posts on my hunting trips because its a lot of fun sharing it with the class. Liam

I enjoy sharing on my blog. Jared

My awesome teacher Mr M has taught me so much about laptops. Rosemary

My favourite of the year is the Fax Rock trip because that was my first time there. It was so hard and so cool I want to go there again and again.  Jack

Something I was pleased with was making it into the RIPPA because I have not made it into rippa before. George
I enjoyed maths because it is fun doing maths and I love learning. Briar

Something I was pleased with was going on the waka because it was my first time and it was with my class, so that made it more fun. Crystal

Something I found interesting was learning about black holes because I didn’t know that when you go into a black hole you stretch so long that you just pop.

Tremains Rippa Rugby Tournament

The Year 5/6 Rippa tournament was a huge success for Parkvale. We had six of the thirty-six teams in the competition! All the teams showed Parkvale PRIDE and played with enjoyment and determination. We even had an all Parkvale final between Parkvale D and Parkvale E. The Parkvale A team finished top of their pool. They won their quarter final against Irongate, before losing to Te Mata in the championship semi final. They easily won their 3rd and 4th playoff to finish 3rd overall.

All the children who competed should feel proud of their day and have gone home with an awesome certificate for their efforts. A huge thanks to the coaches, Lehi Miller, Karl Morgan, Trish Little, Nicole Solomon and Yvette Hardaker, who all did a fantastic job. Also, wonderful to see so many parents coming down to support their child in a sport which is great for boys and girls!

Road Patrolling in the Rain

Keeping our community safe!

Our road patrollers play such an important role for our school community. Yesterday, I captured a snapshot of Ben and Traylan on road patrol at Windsor Ave. Two responsible road patrollers from Room 6, showing Parkvale PRIDE. Even though it started to rain hard, not once did these boys complain or stop concentrating on their job.

As we walked back to school, a rainbow came out. It was almost as if the rainbow was thanking the boys for their efforts.
A rainbow over Parkvale.

I know where the pot of gold lies!

Holt Planetarium Visit

Replica model of the space shuttle!
Today Room 5 and Room 6 went to the Holt Planetarium in Napier. We got to view the night sky in extreme detail, guided by the amazing Mr Sparks. My favourite things under the dome were learning more about the significance of the Southern Cross and seeing exactly where all the planets and constellations are in the sky at the moment. The night sky is like a calendar.

I also loved the chance just to lean back and gaze at the night sky and get pointed out super cool stuff! Earlier, we watched an amazing video of NASA astronauts in space. It showed us some very amusing effects of being zero gravity.

I would strongly recommend a visit to the Hawke's Bay Holt Planetarium. Sunday evening is family night.

Yesterday, Tōtara Hub enjoyed a day of Matariki workshops. A huge thank you to Yvette Hardaker and her amazing volunteers who made this day happen. Wow!

I was lucky enough to wander around the workshops and capture some of the learning action on video. The video above is part one, look out for part two soon!

Here is a Padlet which reflects Room 6's thoughts on what they learnt yesterday.

Tracey's Amazing Park

Recently, our students have been designing parks for their maths learning and home links. They also had a go at working out the perimeter, area and volume of parts of the park. Many of the students created physical or digital models of their parks. Here is Tracey's outstanding example. She has even worked out the volume of her toilets.

Look at Tracey's 3D model and her measurements!

Here are some other fantastic parks on our student blogs:

Catching Up With Our Buddies

We love this story!
On Friday, we finally caught up with our super amazing buddy class, Room 3. They read their stories to us, we helped them to make blog comments, and in some cases we even created blog posts together. Check out the posts on Tracey's, Taylor's, Julius's, Zach's and Ezra's blogs!

I tried to capture the fun learning with the app Explain Everything. My slideshow has videos on it but they didn't upload to camera roll or YouTube. It is still great to listen to and I have included screenshots of the slides that had videos on them below the video.

Taylor is a great buddy!

Zach and Mason got us all singing!
