On Thursday, Tracey brought her motorbike to school. It was neat to see her in action and hear all about her favourite hobby!

Student work of the week this week goes to reading group The Supergirls. They acted out their reading book, retelling it and creating this great video in one follow up reading session!
Well done Bree, Nakita, Imaan, Jessica, Emma, Olivia and on the iPad, Tracey for her excellent filming!

1.5 kilometres

Today we worked at calculating the distance to Camp Kaitawa from Google Maps directions. To do this we had to convert between metres and kilometres. For example 600m and 2.4km. This has led us to investigate what that decimal point means and what the digit that comes after it means. Zeb, Henry and Crighton contributed to this ShowMe to help us understand 1.5 kilometres.

Literacy Fun

Today the X-Men completed their trailer for the great story Kick-start. You can view it below and will be able to find it on their blogs. It is written by Simon Cooke and is a rugby story with a twist. "Lumbering giants... engaged in battle... over an egg?"

Meanwhile the Justice League were making connections to their story The Trouble with Shadow by Julia Ballard. We used ShowMe (my favourite app at the moment) to record our connections on the iPad. The class could see it on screen thanks to our Apple TV. You can watch it below and find it on their blogs too.
For example, Nikitah's great postTracey's terrific post.

Pic Lits

PicLit from PicLits.com

PicLits is a site on our Writing Symbaloo. You get to choose words to form sentences or a poem to match the photo of your choice. There are a lot of photos to choose from.

Here is my example. I chose this photo because I love basketball.

Below I will post links to PicLit posts that students in Room 16 created:

Today our Sports Pals, Olivia, Joshua and Lily taught us a new game for fitness and P.E. It is called Doctor Doctor. They did a wonderful job. Best of all, I could capture some highlights of the game on the iPad while they were doing the teaching!

Beach Fives

Parkvale were lucky to take two teams to the Beach Fives at Ocean Beach on Thursday 14th March. In the lucky dip both teams were drawn in the same pool. Parkvale A won all their pools games to advance to the championship round. To get there, they first had to face an almighty fight against a determined Parkvale B team. The B team took an early lead and held it before losing to the A team two tries to one. It was a great game which became a showcase for Parkvale PRIDE.

The B team went on to win the plate. That came down to an exciting beach sprint, where the fastest five in the team ran off against the fastest five in two other teams. A real photo finish!

The A team finished third overall. They suffered gutsy losses to Peterhead (2-1) and Flaxmere (1-0). The game versus Flaxmere was intense, with Parkvale camped on the Flaxmere line, trying to equalise for most of the second half. They finished with a solid victory over Maraenui.

All players enjoyed their day and we are looking forward to rugby season!

Pen Pal #1 2013

Today our pen pal letters arrived from our great buddy class in the USA, Room 121!

This Padlet / Wallwisher has our favourite parts of our letters. Add to our wall if you like. Click on a message and then you can scroll through them to read all the post it notes.

We were so excited, as you can see from the photos below :) Pen pals are great! What do you think?

Maths Investigation

How would you solve this problem? What would you do first?

Update: This was a bit tough so I had a go at creating a ShowMe. It's not the best but we don't learn if we don't try!

Break Open the Treasure Chest of Learning

Tyrone's winning slogan

Tracey's catchy chant
Room 16 has stepped up to the Learning Slogan challenge. We had a competition and voted for our favourite learning slogan. Tyrone won.

We have combined Tyrone and Tracey's slogans to create a song/chant/waiata to share at assembly tomorrow. Listen to the audio player to hear our noisy practice!

Here are some of our learning slogan posts:

Hemani's Venn Diagram with Nick

Our third Student Work of the Week for 2013 was judged by Mrs Hill from Room 5 Kidd-li-winks this week. We got together with our buddy class, then paired up and compared important things about ourselves. We used Google drawing to create venn diagrams to show things which are the same and different.

Mrs H chose Hemani for how well she worked with her Room 5 buddy, Nick. As you can see, their venn diagram is clear and laid out very effectively. It compares and contrasts important things about them.

The whole of Room 16 worked very well with Room 5 and I am very proud of their efforts!

The Challenge Tree for Term One

Room 16 have begun their Challenge Tree for the term. These are challenges you can complete at home. Then you share them with the class and me. The completed challenge is to go on your blog with a Challenge Tree label (plus other labels that fit).

Remember you have the rest of the term to complete some of these challenges. It is about quality not quantity. We would rather you did one or two of the challenges to your personal best standard and presented them effectively, than rush through all eight. The challenges match the learning and topics that we are covering in the class. At the moment we are learning about our own cultures and sharing things about us with others.
