1 square metre = 10 000 square centimetres

Today in maths, we proved that 1 square metre equals 10 000 square centimetres. It seemed unbelievable at first, but we proved it was true! Thank you to Kayla for inspiring the investigation when solving the perimeter and working out how to find the area for her bivvy.

Taylor, Maia and Julius were so excited that they created an iMovie about it and begged to continue the project during their lunchtime! I was so excited that I had to call Miss Hill in to check it out. She joined in and got us thinking about how big one hectare is.

Perimeter and Area of a Bivvy

Jaidyn's 3D bivvy model
For our Survivor Camp, we are going to make bivvies to sleep in. There is a back-up plan involving tents if they don't quite work out! On Monday, we tried measuring the perimeter and working out the area a bivvy would take up. We tackled this challenge with our learning buddies. Now we are working out how much the perimeter and area would be for a three person bivvy. I am very impressed by the thinking, measuring and problem solving using number strategies!

Now some students are designing 3D models of their bivvies.

The Sound Collector

The Sound Collector

A stranger called this morning
Dressed all in black and grey
Put every sound into a bag
And carried them away.

The whistling of the kettle
The turning of the lock
The purring of the kitten
The ticking of the clock

The popping of the toaster
The crunching of the flakes
When you spread the marmalade
The scraping sound it makes

The hissing of the frying-pan
The ticking of the grill
The bubbling of the bathtub
As it starts to fill

The drumming of the raindrops
On the window-pane
When you do the washing-up
The gurgle of the drain

The crying of the baby
The squeaking of the chair
The swishing of the curtain
The creaking of the stair

A stranger called this morning
He didn't leave his name
Left us only silence
Life will never be the same.

What Am I?

The Stormtroopers literacy group read a new poem today. We recorded it on the iPad and then listened back to ourselves. Everyone improved after their first and then their second try. I think the Stormtroopers showed good reading skills! We guessed what the answer to the riddle in the poem is. Can you?

Buddy Reading!

Today our buddy class, Room 3 visited. It was fantastic to see how beautifully all the children related to each other. Our task was reading together. Ezra created a trailer all about it.

Nasa-Jaye Capsizes

On your marks, get set, go!
Day two of kayaking in the pool. Basically, everyone brought their togs today. I wonder why? Lots of great photos which the students will be sharing in different ways on their blogs.

Our highlight was this little video of Nasa-Jaye capsizing. Cameron has been asking how to adjust speeds on videos, so we had a little play with this one. A big thank you for Nasa-Jaye for being such a good sport!

Update: check out Maia's awesomely entertaining kayaking video!

Kayaking Fun

Give Jack a double tick for enjoyment!
Our swimming lessons returned today, or did they? Not quite, but something happened that seemed to get the students of Room 6 very excited. Using Miss Paki's generous gift which are our new school kayaks, we practised a different type of water safety in the pool. Those of us without togs became our assessors and coaches and we had a seriously enjoyable learning time. I am sure others will remember their togs again now!

This is what our buddy assessors looked for:

  • Paddle Hold (right angles, right way, consistency)
  • Balance
  • Overall Safety
  • Speed
  • Enjoyment
Can you see the criteria displayed in this video?

He Waka Eke Noa

He waka eke noa. We are all in the canoe together.

Just like the Room Seven Superstars, we are using this whakatauki to inspire us to learn and work together so that we can reach our goals. Kia ora Room 7 and Mr Cottrell!

All of us in Room 6 have created a part of the waka that represents us. I am at the head of the waka, along with Mr Severinsen, who we are lucky to have when I am not teaching Room 6. Together, our pieces create our waka. Without any one of the pieces, our waka is not complete.

School Singing - You Can Count on Me

You Can Count on Me from Kieren Moriarty on Vimeo.

Parkvale love singing this Bruno Mars tune. It has a strong message.

"Count On Me" by Bruno Mars

[Verse 1:]
Oh uh-huh
If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea
I'll sail the world to find you
If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can't see
I'll be the light to guide you

Find out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need

[Chorus:]
You can count on me like 1, 2, 3
I'll be there
And I know when I need it
I can count on you like 4, 3, 2
You'll be there
'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah
Ooooooh, oooohhh yeah, yeah

[Verse 2:]
If you're tossin' and you're turnin'
And you just can't fall asleep
I'll sing a song beside you
And if you ever forget how much you really mean to me
Every day I will remind you

Oooh
Find out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need

[Chorus:]
You can count on me like 1, 2, 3
I'll be there
And I know when I need it
I can count on you like 4, 3, 2
You'll be there
'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah
Ooooooh, oooohhh yeah, yeah

You'll always have my shoulder when you cry
I'll never let go, never say goodbye
You know...

[Chorus:]
You can count on me like 1, 2, 3
I'll be there
And I know when I need it
I can count on you like 4, 3, 2
You'll be there
'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah
Ooooooh, oooohhh

You can count on me 'cause I can count on you

Kuripapango: A Sneak Preview

Our Survivor Camp is coming soon! This afternoon, I was lucky enough to visit the site at Kuripapango on the lovely Ngaruroro River. Mrs Hardaker, Mrs Roil and I had a great time being shown around by our knowledgeable tour guide, Mr Ford. I even dived into the river in my work shorts, just to you know, check it out. Beautiful!

Here are some snapshots I took on my phone. As always, click on the image for a closer look.

Enjoyment of the Race

The 5 senses
I was fluctuating between total calm anticipation and that physical impulse for a nervous toilet stop. Everywhere around me were confident cyclists wearing helmets, lycra and coloured tags. Most of the green tags were disappearing. I was green. The commentator kept announcing new numbers and the colour they belonged to. Not my colour, not my number. The chatter merged into one continuous sound and then she appeared... Nicky, running strong and upright. I cheered her on and smiled at the echoing support from my colleagues to the left.

Quickly, I carried the bike forward and rammed my left leg up against the gates. I called Nicky's name and she ran towards me. In a brief panic, she transferred the electronic bracelet to my ankle. I would find out later that Nicky attached my leg to the metal post at first and that my hairy ankle had almost made her vomit!

With urgency, I ran my bike towards the marshals and got on my seat as soon as I could. My legs eased into the rotations as I breathed in the sea air. Faint smells of barbecue dissipated into the distance. My bike cut through the bumpy road, propelled by those racing wheels Stephen had added and my newly discovered enjoyment of the race. I was free. Completely alive in the moment.

Wonder: Ordinary?

Wonder by R.J. Palacio is not an ordinary book. I love it. I am looking forward to reading it as a shared reading with Room 6. We have twenty copies of the book from the library. The book trailer above does a good job of advertising the book. It is persuading the viewer to read it. We discovered that the words come from the first chapter, Ordinary.

Ordinary

I know I'm not an ordinary ten-year old kid. I mean, sure, I do ordinary things. I eat ice cream. I ride my bike. I play ball. I have an XBox. Stuff like that makes me ordinary. I guess. And I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids don't get stared at wherever they go.
